A former military dog handler who had been working at petsmart for 18 months was fired for bringing his dog into work.

Eric Favetta, a 31-year-old PetSmart was fired for "theft of services" after bringing his dog into the store during an after-hour shift he picked up as a favor to the store’s management. The shift was added in order to prep the store for a visit by officials from Martha Stewart's company, who wanted to discuss selling products at the store.

The former dog handler Didn’t want his dog home alone and opted to bring it into work with him, and instead of letting the dog roam around, put it in the store’s “doggie day care” section while he continued to work.

According to PetSmart spokeswoman Jessica White, the doggie day care is a huge part of the company’s revenue and thus "viewed as sale items the same way items on the shelf are” she said. "To use the facilities and not pay for it — it falls under the same lines."PetSmart eventually offered Favetta his job back and a transfer to another store. He accepted — but then he was offered a job at a company that uses animals to search for hazards. Favetta took it.
