Saturday, June 5th, 2010 will mark the 18thKROQ Weenie Roast, an alternative rock event which has become an annual tradition in California. The 2010 KROQ Weenie Roast will be returning to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre located in Irvine, CA, the same venue which has held the Weenie Roast every year, except for 2000. This year’s KROQ Weenie Roast will be headlined by two bands with rich histories, Sublime with Rome and Stone Temple Pilots (STP).

The roots of Sublime with Rome date back to the summer of 1989, when the original Sublime band members; Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh, started playing shows in small clubs. In time the group gained momentum, even serving as a headliner for the first ever Warped Tour in 1995. However, the band parted ways in 1996 after Nowell died of a heroin overdose, but in 2009 Wilson and Gaugh started playing music again under the Sublime name, with Rome Ramirez taking over on vocals. A lawsuit from Nowell’s family resulted in Wilson and Gaugh changing the band’s name to Sublime with Rome.

STP, a group familiar with the Weenie Roast, playing at the annual event in 1993, as well as in 2000 and 2001, consists of Scott Weiland (vocals), Robert DeLeo (bass), Dean DeLeo (guitar), and Eric Kretz (drums). Like Sublime with Rome, the Stone Temple Pilots origins date back to the 1980s. The foundation for the group started at a concert in 1986, where Scott Weiland and Robert DeLeo met and discovered they had the same girlfriend. The guys dumped the girl and started playing music together. Throughout the 1990s the band dealt with many issues, stemming from the legal troubles of Weiland. Eventually, in 2002, the group disbanded for good. Or so everyone thought. Efforts of Weiland’s wife led to a STP reunion in 2007, and the band has remained a force in music ever since. The group even has a new album scheduled for release May 25th.

Over 10 other bands will be joining Sublime with Rome and STP Saturday, June 5that the KROQ Weenie Roast, including Chevelle, Cage the Elephant, Paramore, Deftones, and Hole. Tickets for the KROQ Weenie Roast went on sale May 15th and can be purchased from Ticketmaster. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit Heal the Bay and Surfrider Foundation. Heal the Bay, a nonprofit organization, works to clean and ensure the safety of Southern California’s costal waters. Surfrider Foundation, another nonprofit organization, works to preserve the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches.
