14,000 plus watched live from The Honda Center and millions more tuned into FOX on Saturday, November 12th to see a defeated, befuddled Cain Velasquez observe UFC officials crowning Junior Dos Santos the NEW UFC Heavyweight Champion. 5.7million viewers remained glued to their television sets as Dos Santos delivered a stunning right hand to Velasquez which quickly led to the UFC Heavyweight Championship changing hands. The highly touted fight only lasted a minute and four seconds but the UFC on FOX special made evident the action inside the octagon provides only a small portion of what MMA really offers.

Viewers who tuned into the UFC on FOX broadcast saw determination, strategy, and passion exemplified. Determination came in the form of the video packages put together discussing the hardships each fighter experienced growing up. The bios resembled rags to riches stories, the kind of stories you might associate with politicians trying to reach blue-collar workers. Strategy took center stage prior to the bout when UFC President Dana White and number three seeded heavyweight Brock Lesnar broke down the forthcoming fight, focusing on whether Dos Santos could block takedowns from an elite amateur wrestler such as Velasquez. Their analysis clued MMA virgins in on what to look for during the fight.

Finally UFC on FOX demonstrated exactly how much passion fans, executives, and fighters exude for the sport. The Honda Center crowd oozed with enthusiasm for Cain Velasquez, a man who took much pride in being the first ever Mexican UFC Heavyweight Champion. Dana White’s tone of voice and body language throughout the pre-fight coverage revealed his great passion for mixed martial arts. Junior Dos Santos’s attempts to fight back tears during his post-fight interview exhibited how much MMA means to him. All these sentiments prove to even the most jaded MMA critics there’s plenty more to the sport than just violence.

The fact the UFC Heavyweight Title bout lasted little over a minute may seem disappointing but in reality it goes to show how MMA’s unpredictability can enhance the sport’s entertainment value. Both Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos entered Anaheim’s Honda Center undefeated in the UFC. The thought of Velasquez’s supreme amateur wrestling skills clashing with Dos Santos’s no nonsense fighting style created an atmosphere embodying the “irresistible force meets an immovable object” paradox. Nobody knew what would happen, making the results extremely intriguing.

Overall the debut edition of UFC on FOX reached pivotal milestones to become a tremendous success. The 5.7million viewers represent the biggest audience EVER to watch a UFC event. Additionally the amount of viewers establishes Velasquez vs. Dos Santos as the most watched professional fight on any network since 2003’s boxing encounter between Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko. Beyond the history making statistics, UFC on FOX triumphed by giving MMA virgins a deeper appreciation for the sport.
