Dave Matthews Band Rocks Out To Full House

“Lovely,” Dave Matthews said several songs into his concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California. The standing crowd responded with screams, cheers, and vigorous clapping. Dave could have been referring to the evening, as it was a ‘lovely’ night in Irvine, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Or he could have been referring to the ‘lovely’ crowd who enthusiastically packed the amphitheater. DNB opened the concert with what Dave Matthews Band longtime fans, like myself, would call “an old song”. Minarets, which was originally released in 1993 on the Remember Two Things album, clearly energized the audience. As a veteran Dave Matthews Band concertgoer and fan, their set lists are always intriguing…almost a guessing game, as the concerts never have duplicate set lists. I’ve been to 23 Dave concerts and every set list has been different, especially back-to-back concerts in the same city. If Dave plays in the same city two nights in a row, I always go to both concerts, knowing that I can hear about 40 songs between the two shows.

Tonight’s show was a prime example. They played a high-quality mixture of old songs and new songs, keeping the eclectic crowd appeased. I was eager to hear the set list and made predictions about what they were going to play privately in my head. There have been other DMB concerts where they lacked balance, by either playing too many older songs or too many new (unknown) songs. There have also been concerts where they jammed on and on for each song, easily losing the crowd and not keep up the momentum. The consensus in the women’s room was that it was “one of the best concerts yet”. One woman shared that she had never seen DMB before and was beyond stunned at how good they were live. Another woman said that this was her tenth concert and they are better every time she sees them. All statements I overheard were from people whose DMB experiences range from being their first concert to those of us who have seen him multiple times.

Even better than DM was the B – founding members, Carter Beauford (drums), Stefan Lessard (bass), and Boyd Tinsley (fiddler), as well as touring members Jeff Coffin (saxophonist), Tim Reynolds (electric guitars), and Rashawn Ross (trumpet) - who sounded magnificent together. There was a well-timed balance of solos, with Tinsley and Lessard playing off each other on two occasions; while Matthews and the others stood in the wings. It is evident by their facial expressions and enthusiastic body language that each member enjoys performing and sharing their talent. One moment Dave was dancing around center stage, then laughing with Stefan, before turning his back to the audience and facing Carter, whose grin was ear to ear. At one point, I turned to my husband and said, “They always have smiles on their faces, especially Carter! They look like they are having so much fun.” This energy has been displayed for 20 years, however the Dave Matthews Band will take 2011 off for the first time. Long time fans are used to seeing Dave every summer, so 2011 will be different. We will certainly be in need of a concert or two upon their return.

The set list from tonight’s show is below:

Minarets , Shake Me Like A Monkey , Proudest Monkey , Satellite , Funny The Way It Is , Lying In the Hands of God , Write A Song , You Might Die Trying , (Still Water) , Don’t Drink the Water , Sister , Dancing Nancies , Alligator Pie , Cant Stop  , Grey Street , Black Jack , You and Me , Ants Marching. Encore:, Rye Whiskey , Jimi Thing.

And a HUGE THANKS to Kate Lackey from Las Vegas for being our first guest blogger and writing this review!
