When Daughtry took the stage, the now almost full arena was on their feet screaming. A nice intro buildup, the Batman movie theme, with the band behind a lit up white curtain covering the stage to eventually start the set with “Every Time You Turn Around “ to get the crowd on their feet and trying to beat out the tayler swift fans for the loudest fans of the year.
Everything about this production was something to talk about. With the backgrounds changing to represent a timeline of the concert (first background being the Daughtry logo and the last being a guy walking into the sunset to represent the end, to the lighting, with blues, pinks, reds, lasers and spotlights – never overpowering one another to light up the stage perfectly, to the audio being better then a CD, “Live” quality without any issues typically experienced with concerts in larger venues, everything was put in motion for what could be concert of the year. Today’s performance wasn’t only about Daughtry’s own music, two personal highlights from the night was when the band did the cover of Phil Colins’ “In The Air Tonight” which started off as a solo with frontman Chris Daughtry, but ended with the entire band for the final versus, and the cover of Billy Idol’s “Rebel Ya”. Noticeably, both covers had a more of a rocker edge on it then in their original form, bringing them current in a way that appealed to the rock fans of all ages in the almost filled arena. Daughtry wasn’t all about show and no tell, singer Chris shared some insight into the song writing process, explaining he might write some 70 songs but only 20 will make it on a CD – but that was fine because he was still able to share one of his favorites with us that night, “Long Way”, Written by Chris Daughtry and Lifehouse front man Jason Wade. The song, though never heard before by most if not everybody in the audience and preformed as a solo impressed the audience whom responded with a standing ovation. Another song, September, which Chris shared with us was about growing up in a town of 100 people and one gas station, and realizing that to make it he would have to leave. By the end of Chris Daughtry’s solo performance of the song, it almost seemed like the audience was competing with Taylor Swift fans for loudest screams of the year. The concert, through the end, was performed by the entire band with as much hart as from the first song. Everything really was perfect with the event from their new temporary drummer Robin drummer who, well, quite possibly is as good if not better then ex band mate Joey Barnes, to the lights, lasers, to the audio to the performances of the band members – it was a lesson being taught to rock groups nationwide – go big or go home. And they sure did go big! Towards the end of the concert, a special encore performance, a mash up of Daughtry’s “Home” and Lifehouse’s “Can’t Take My Eyes off of you” performed by the entire band from Daughtry and Lifehouse front man Jason Wade. If you are lucky enough to have an opportunity to see Daughtry live, make sure you don’t miss it. This is one of those things that you will live to regret if you miss them.
